June 3, 2003:  Mini Rant -  Let Me See Your Face

To the Muslim woman who objects to having her picture taken on her Florida driver’s license – I have one comment – if you do not want your picture taken due to your religious beliefs - TAKE THE BUS.   There are certain rules that go along with the privilege of driving – oh, you thought driving a car was a one of our fundamental rights – WRONG - nowhere does it say “life, liberty and the pursuit of driving nirvana.” As a privilege, it is subject to reasonable restrictions – one basic one being the driver must be properly identified.  We need to know that it really is you behind the wheel of that car –not your sister, not your aunt, not your first grade teacher . . . well, you get the idea.  For insurance, for traffic citations, for identification of a body of a crime scene, a person’s face is what we commonly use to confirm that you are who you say you are.

Short and sweet – if you do not want your picture taken, then you do not get to exercise the privilege of driving.  Go ahead, make it into a religious fight – it is not.  It is basic common sense.  So do me a favor, drop you asinine lawsuit and start buying those bus tokens.  Hey, I will even send you money so you can ride the bus a few times for free.  Because honey, if you're not going to let us photograph your face - you are going to be taking that bus.
